The chance to fly on an Airbus A340 is getting more and more difficult these days as the type is become widely withdrawn from passenger service, as the aircraft is getting older and the more fuel efficient 2 engine airliners are in favour with airlines.
In this video filmed by Henry Tenby on board Air Tahiti Nui Airbus A340 F-OSUB, we were inbound to LAX on an 8 hour overnight trans Pacific flight from Papeete French Polynesia. We woke up to beautiful clear skies over the city of Los Angeles so what a perfect opportunity to film the entire let down over the general Los Angeles area and the landing at LAX.
The view from possibly the best seat in the house with a view of the forward wing and the two engines, was nothing less than spectacular. We commenced our decent over the Catalina Island and approached the mainland over Long Beach, and then performed some approach turns as we entered the landing pattern for LAX.
Today, Air Tahiti Nui has replaced their fleet of Air bus A340s with new Boeing 787s, so this lovely view of the A340 engines banking and turning over the expanse of LA can never be repeated.
